Piwakawaka

Fantail Group

Our Piwakawaka Group is specially designed for our two- to three-year-old tamariki who are just beginning their preschool journey.

In this gentle, teacher-led morning session, children are welcomed into a nurturing and supportive environment where they begin to explore group learning through play, relationships, and routine. This time helps lay important social, emotional, and spiritual foundations that will support their growth throughout their early years.

Growing Hearts and Minds

First steps in learning and friendship
In these early years, we focus on building foundational social, emotional, and communication skills. Children are guided through meaningful play-based activities that help them connect with others, grow in confidence, and begin to understand how to participate in group settings. Prayer and karakia are woven into the rhythm of each day, nurturing a sense of God’s presence and care from the very start.

During their time in the Piwakawaka Group, children are supported in developing:

  • Turn-taking and learning how to share space with others
  • Conversational skills, such as listening and responding to questions
  • Early literacy and numeracy concepts through songs, stories, and play
  • Following instructions and understanding simple routines
  • Co-operation with peers and teachers
  • Prayer and spiritual awareness, acknowledging God as part of their daily lives
  • Body awareness and control through movement, music, and sensory play

This group lays a gentle yet meaningful foundation for future learning, helping each child feel secure, included, and loved as they grow.
