Ruru

Owl Group

Our Ruru Group is a special transition-to-school programme offered each afternoon at 1:00 pm. It is designed to gently prepare our oldest tamariki for the next step in their learning journey.

With a focus on growing independence, confidence, and responsibility, this group supports children as they get ready to enter a school environment.

  • Independent toileting and dressing
  • Turn-taking in conversation
  • Focus and task completion
  • Problem-solving with peers
  • Managing lunch and packaging
  • Leadership roles and special privileges

Growing School Readiness

Building Confidence and Independence
Teachers provide guidance and encouragement as children continue to strengthen their self-help, social, and learning skills in more intentional ways. The Ruru Group balances structure with play, fostering a sense of leadership, focus, and readiness.

Children in this group are supported in developing:

  • Extended literacy and numeracy skills and strategies
  • Responsibility for their own belongings
  • Independent toileting and dressing
  • Patience and turn-taking in conversation
  • The ability to focus on and complete tasks
  • Problem-solving skills for peer disagreements
  • Confidence in managing their lunchbox and food choices

Ruru Group tamariki are also encouraged to take on leadership roles, participate in special outings, and enjoy unique privileges that celebrate their role as preschool leaders and soon-to-be school students.
